A Beginner’s Guide to Stem Cells and Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cells and stem cell therapy are gaining a lot of popularity in the news today. Often, the things you hear from the news about these things are controversial. For a better understanding of stem cell therapy, you can read more here about them. When it comes to stem cell therapy, for instance, there are various approaches to it. For the best results from this procedure, always choose the simple and legal ones.

To begin to understand stem cell therapy, you have to know that there are embryonic and adult stem cells. One of the things that you need to know about stem cells is that they are undifferentiated cells with the ability to renew themselves and develop into various types of tissues. As the name implies, you get embryonic stem cells from early stage embryos. For this stem cell, it can differentiate into different types of adult cells. These stem cells behave in a consistent manner when they are under a microscope. Once they get injected into the body, however, they become less predictable. Even with such controversies, they offer benefits to research. However, these stem cells are not something you use for actual treatments.

Meanwhile, adult stem cells come from post-fetal animals. One such example of this type of stem cell is hematopoietic stem cells that develop into white or red blood cells. There are also mesenchymal cells that transform into varying tissues like ligaments, tendons, bones, cartilages, liver, nerves, and heart. The common sources of adult stem cells are brain tissue, bone marrow, muscles, and fat. From these sources, fat has the most mesenchymal stem cells. On the other hand, the umbilical blood or bone barrow has more stem cells that develop into white or red blood cells.

For stem cells, they can be classified further as xenogenic, allogenic, and autologous. Autologous stem cells have the origins from the same animal. These stem cells are often used for transplants because they will not be rejected. Allogenic stem cells, on the other hand, come from a donor under the same species. When it comes to stem cells that come from a donor belonging to a different species, you refer to them as xenogenic stem cells.

Stem cells used in stem cell therapy don’t only have the capacity to develop into different tissues that the body needs. Moreover, these cells are beneficial in terms of healing. Stem cells are essential for healing because of their ability to produce over thirty kinds of tissue chemicals and growth factors. These cells also help make other systemic and local stem cells of the body focus on repairing damaged tissues. The process of immune modulation also requires these cells. The functions of T-cells are something that they help with in terms of their suppression or promotion.

Many stem cell therapy studies are done in horses. Stem cell therapy has been shown to offer ligament injury repair in horses. Click here for more information about stem cell therapy.
